Der Begriff "Vitamin A" umfasst mehrere Verbindungen, m.in Retinol, seine Derivate (Retinoide) und Provitamin A oder Beta-Carotin. Diese Verbindungen sind am Sehprozess beteiligt, sind für das reibungslose Funktionieren der Zellmembranen und den Zustand der Haut verantwortlich. Retinoide, m.in Isotretinoin oder Adapalen, gelten als eines der wirksamsten Anti-Akne-Medikamente.
