Według norm większości laboratoriów wynik testu ciążowego jest pozytywny, gdy stężenie hormonu beta hCG przekroczy 5 mIU/ml. Z kolei wynik beta hCG powyżej 5 mIU/ml potwierdza ciążę. U kobiety będącej już w ciąży niski poziom gonadotropiny kosmówkowej może wskazywać na poronienie lub ciążę pozamaciczną.
