Properly used birth control pills are very effective in preventing pregnancy and its risk is negligible. Intercourse reduces the risk of pregnancy in the event that hormonal contraception fails. On its own, however, it is not considered effective. However, using both methods at the same time should protect you well against fertilization, but you can not give a 100% guarantee - there is always some - even if small - risk of failure.
