The mechanism of action of hormonal intrauterine devices is based on the local action of hormones on the endometrium, which causes, m.in. inhibition of endometrial growth. The direct action of hormones contained in the intrauterine device makes it possible to limit their dose. However, this does not mean that the hormones released in the uterine cavity are not absorbed into the bloodstream. However, plasma hormone concentrations are very low. The decision on whether an intrauterine device containing hormones can be used in a given patient is made by the doctor individually, taking into account, m.in general health, chronic diseases and medications used. The mere fact of taking warfarin or acenocoumarol is not a contraindication to the use of intrauterine devices containing hormones. Contraindication to the use of intrauterine therapeutic systems containing hormones is acute venous thromboembolism. In people with thromboembolic disorder, the decision on the use of this method of contraception is made by the doctor.
