Unused Olfen Patch patches will not be effective in this case. They contain diclofenac, which is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) intended solely for relieving inflammatory pain resulting from mechanical injuries such as bruises, sprains or limb strains.
Pain after shingles (postherpetic neuralgia) is a neuropathic pain (resulting from nerve damage), not inflammatory. NSAIDs, including diclofenac contained in patches, are not effective in treating this type of ailment and are not registered for this purpose. In addition, the use of Olfen Patch patches on diseased skin (e.g. with shingles scars, irritated or damaged) is contraindicated and can lead to severe irritation, skin inflammation or allergies.
In the treatment of postherpetic neuralgia, completely different groups of drugs are standardly used, such as anticonvulsants (e.g. gabapentin, pregabalin), antidepressants or patches containing lidocaine (a local anesthetic) that are registered for this particular indication.
If the pain after shingles is bothersome for you, please do not use NSAID-related pain patches on your own. It is necessary to consult a doctor (neurologist or family doctor), who will select the appropriate pharmacological therapy dedicated to neuropathic pain.
