Xifaxan may affect the effectiveness of the Ginoring disc. It is usually recommended to use condoms additionally throughout the period of use of Xifaxan and for 28 days after discontinuation. Rifaximin (the active ingredient in Xifaxan) is a weak inducer of cytochrome P450 CYP3A4 isoenzyme, and ginoring disc documentation indicates that "There may be interactions with medicinal products or herbal products that induce microsomal enzymes, especially cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes, which may lead to an increase in clearance, resulting in a decrease in plasma sex hormones and a decrease in the effectiveness of combined hormonal contraceptives, including the Ginoring vaginal therapeutic system."
