Is the result of a pregnancy test taken 12 days after intercourse reliable? Can painful breasts be a side effect of birth control pills?

How many days after intercourse, when taking birth control pills, you can do a test. The 10 mIU/ml test after 12 days in the morning gave a negative result, but my breasts hurt and veins appeared on them. Could it be a side effect of contraception or is it better to repeat the test?
