Poza preparatami z kwasem acetylosalicylowym (np. Acard, Polocard, Proficar) oraz preparatów do stosowania na skórę z heparyną stosowanych w leczeniu żylaków, leki przeciwzakrzepowe są dostępne wyłącznie z przepisu lekarza - na receptę.
Kwas acetylosalicylowy hamuje aktywność tromboksanu, który powoduje zlepianie się płytek krwi, co zapobiega tworzeniu się skrzepów i zatorów w naczyniach krwionośnych i zmniejsza ryzyko wystąpienia zawału serca.
