Heartburn is an unpleasant burning sensation in the area of the esophagus and sternum, which can be a symptom of gastroesophageal reflux disease, commonly known as reflux. In order to alleviate heartburn, antacids or plant preparations that form a protective coating on the mucous membrane of the digestive system, such as marshmallow or linseed, can be used temporarily. In the treatment of reflux, over-the-counter medicines that reduce the secretion of hydrochloric acid in the stomach, such as omeprazole, pantoprazole and famotidine, for example, can be used.
