When in the case of diarrhea you do not eat food for several hours or take limited meals, is the absorption of drugs (eg contraception) preserved? Is the absorption of drugs reduced only if the content is excreted, or are there still any reactions affecting them?

In the case of contraceptive pills, the presence of food does not have a major impact on the absorption and action of the drug - they can be taken regardless of a meal, however, when using many drugs, the opposite is true - this is of great importance (e.g. proton pump inhibitors and thyroid hormones are taken on an empty stomach; most NSAIDs, glucocorticosteroids are taken after a meal). It is worth remembering that loose stool is not a reason to weaken the effectiveness of contraception, but vomiting and intense diarrhea up to about 3-4 hours after taking the tablet may be a source of incomplete absorption of the drug. You should then follow the recommendations as with the missed tablet. During diarrhea, our normal microbiome is violated - it is worth taking care of proper supplementation with probiotics.
