If we want to check if we are infected with the coronavirus or if we can still infect others after the symptoms have subsided, it is worth taking an antigen test for the coronavirus.

I am attaching links to websites where you can compare the prices of this type of products in online pharmacies and order them with pickup at the pharmacy or home delivery:

The latest research results show that a person infected with the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus excretes the virus for several days after the symptoms of the disease disappear. Since the highest density of coronavirus variants currently found in the environment is in the throat - it is worth doing an antigen test from saliva after getting sick, e.g. Mila SARS-CoV-2 rapid antigen test from saliva: https://www.gdziepolek.pl/produkty/112299/test-na-koronawirusa-covid-19-antygenowy-ze-sliny-mila-covid-19-test/apteki A positive result carries a high probability of transmitting the virus to other people.

From February 15 in Poland, isolation will last seven days, instead of ten. A change has also been introduced in which the quarantine for people living with the infected person will end with the passage of time of isolation of the patient (so far it has been extended by an additional seven days). Quarantine after contact with an infected person will also be lifted.

The flexible approach to managing isolation time depending on the epidemic situation is evidenced by the provision in force since February 2, 2022, which shortens the time of isolation in the event of COVID-19, but only for people who perform medical profession or work in uniformed services. The isolation time has been reduced for these occupational groups from ten to seven days, with a test that will be available from the fifth day, the negative result of which will exempt from further isolation.

New information is constantly emerging on the guidelines for the recommended isolation period. On January 28, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control published guidelines "Guidance on ending the isolation period for people with COVID-19" - this is the third update of this document: https://www.ecdc.europa.eu/en/publications-data/covid-19-guidance-discharge-and-ending-isolation The publication confirms that at the moment the exact determination of the time for which a patient can infect others is unknown and may be individually variable, depending on the state of the immune system, age, severity of infection, as well as depending on the variant of the virus. However, the above publication presents a complete algorithm proposing different variants of the course of isolation depending on the patient's condition and status, which takes into account a number of factors, such as: - resolution of symptoms or their significant alleviation: the absence of fever for at least 24 hours was considered particularly important; - the length of time that has elapsed since the onset of symptoms: with the duration of the disease, the probability of the presence of infectious molecules in the body should decrease; - severity of the disease: in cases with a mild or moderate course, SARS-CoV-2 was detected up to 10 days after the onset of symptoms, among hospitalized patients the virus was detected up to 20 days after the onset of symptoms, and in patients in severe and critical condition - up to 32 days; - immune status: in vaccinated patients, an earlier end of isolation may be considered (under other conditions); - negative result of an antigen or RT-PCR test from the upper respiratory tract: twice a negative result of tests carried out with an interval of at least 24 hours speaks (under other conditions) for the possibility of terminating the isolation.

There is no full agreement on how long a person infected with coronavirus can pose a threat to others. In the Polish study of the Agency for Health Technology Assessment and Tariff on the diagnosis of COVID-19, you can find information that infectivity begins about 3 days before the onset of symptoms. In an asymptomatic patient, it expires between 7-14 days after the onset of symptoms, in a symptomatic person - after 14 days, and in people with reduced immunity and immunosuppressive treatment it may last longer. In our country, there is a 10-day isolation for asymptomatic patients and a 13-day isolation for patients who have developed symptoms. To be precise, the isolation of the symptomatic patient should end after three days without fever and without respiratory symptoms, but not earlier than 13 days from the date of the onset of the first symptoms. This means that the isolation time may eventually be longer and is determined by the GP caring for the patient. However, there are countries that have shortened the isolation period to seven or even just five days under additional conditions - no symptoms, a negative test result or an additional obligation to wear a mask for the next days. This is due to confirmed information that the greatest probability of transmitting the virus to other people is at an early stage of infection. The decisions taken on this basis to shorten the isolation time are to be a compromise between prevention and minimizing the impact of the pandemic on the economy and everyday life. At the moment, it is difficult to assess from an epidemiological point of view to what extent such decisions will turn out to be rational. Scientists also do not fully agree on how the possibility of infecting others is affected by the variant of the virus that attacked the body and the fact of being vaccinated against COVID-19. According to most reviews, vaccinated individuals are less contagious. At the same time, new variants such as Delta or Omikron appear to be significantly more contagious compared to the original variant at the beginning of the pandemic.
