Xarelto jest lekiem przeciwzakrzepowym nowej generacji. Bezpośrednio hamuje czynnik Xa krzepnięcia krwi:

Natomiast kwas acetylosalicylowy (zawarty np. w leku Aspirin), ale w małych dawkach (czyli pod nazwą m.in. Acard, Polocard, Anacard) wykazuje działanie przeciwpłytkowe. Hamuje agregację płytek krwi i zależny od tromboksanu skurcz naczyń krwionośnych.
Mechanizm działania obydwu preparatów jest odmienny. Na pewno nie można ich stosować zamiennie. Stosowanie konkretnego leku powinno odbywać się pod kontrolą lekarską, w zależności od wskazań i historii choroby pacjenta.
