Since no such studies have been conducted, the exact effects are difficult to predict. If there were no gastrointestinal symptoms (e.g. nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea) during the use of the medicine, there is no reason to suspect poisoning – it is more likely that the medicine worked less well, which may have made the treatment less effective.
The greatest risk remains the deterioration of the control of symptoms such as anxiety, insomnia or psychotic symptoms, with the profile of side effects usually not changing, although the quality of the drug may be reduced. In order for the treatment to be safe and effective, it is worth avoiding the use of expired preparations in the future.
