For persistent tension headaches, the Neurologist prescribed me 10 mg of Amitriptylium VP, after 5 days I should increase to 20mg. I'm supposed to take them for a few months and I'm wondering if this one will cure these pains or just mask them, and if I stop taking the medication, the pains will come back.

Amitriptyline is a tricyclic antidepressant, but it is also used to treat chronic pain such as migraine, tension pain, and neuropathic pain. For tension pains, Amitriptyline can help relieve symptoms by affecting serotonin and antihistamine receptors.
It is important to understand that Amitriptyline is not a medication that will cure the cause of your pain, but it can help you control your symptoms and improve your quality of life. Pain management is often a complex process that may include pharmacotherapy, physical therapies, psychotherapy, and other approaches.
Taking Amitriptyline as directed by your doctor can help control headaches, but the decision to use it long-term and whether to stop taking it should be made by your doctor. Discontinuation of treatment without consulting a doctor may lead to a recurrence of symptoms.
