Can Fentanyl be used as a sedative before gastroscopy?

I wanted to ask about fentanyl given for gastroscopy. In a few days I have this test and I asked for something sedative and the facility only has this medication available. I have fears and huge reflexes during this examination. But the potency and side effects of this drug I fear probably even more. What do you think about this substance for this study, can refuse to administer it? If this test supposedly doesn't hurt, why the strongest painkiller in the world?

Fentanyl is used not only as an analgesic, but also in the premedication process - as a preparation preparing the patient for the procedure (reducing stress, tension, inducing a state of deep calmation). A single administration of all anesthetic and sedative drugs may be associated with side effects such as increased drowsiness or nausea, but these symptoms disappear spontaneously within a few to several hours. During gastroscopy, preparations that anesthetize the mucous membrane of the throat are administered, which reduce the gag reflex. You can also ask your doctor about the possibility of performing the procedure under full anesthesia.
