Autoimmune diseases and the use of immunosuppressive drugs can affect COVID-19 test results, including antigen tests. COVID-19 antigen tests work by detecting a virus protein, called antigen, in a sample taken from a patient. However, people with autoimmune systemic diseases and using immunosuppressants may have a weakened immune response, which can lead to a reduced amount of virus antigen in the sample, which in turn can lead to false negative antigen test results. Therefore, it is important to inform medical professionals about autoimmune systemic diseases and immunosuppressive drugs used before conducting a COVID-19 test so that these factors can be taken into account and the test results interpreted more accurately. In these cases, additional tests, such as PCR or antibody tests, may be necessary to confirm or rule out the presence of the virus.
