Can the lack of an overlay on the jet test be the cause of a disturbed result?
Is it important to overlay the pregnancy test? I took a pregnancy test from the urine stream and forgot to apply the overlay. Could the result be not true?

You did not write what exactly test you performed. However, if it was made contrary to the instructions, then yes, the result may not be reliable. From the jet test, you usually need to pull the cap and bring the tip of the test closer to the urine stream.
