Alcohol will most likely not affect the way semaglutide (the active ingredient in Ozempic) works, or at least this effect is not described in the drug documentation. Despite this, drinking alcohol may be contraindicated during therapy with this drug. Ozempic lowers blood sugar levels, which may coincide with the effect of alcohol on glycemic levels. Combining Ozempic with alcohol can therefore lead to an excessive, health-threatening drop in blood glucose levels (hypoglycaemia). The reverse reaction, i.e. hyperglycemia, cannot be excluded, which depends on the frequency and amount of alcohol consumed. In the case of poorly controlled diabetes, alcohol consumption will be completely contraindicated, similarly if it is accompanied by neuropathy (nerve damage), pancreatic diseases or high triglyceride levels. If you want to occasionally drink a small amount of drinks containing ethanol, please talk to your diabetologist what amounts he considers safe for you, taking into account your health situation.
