Antybiotyk jest lekiem, który należy "wybrać do końca", a zatem przyjąć lub podać całą przepisaną przez lekarza ilość leku czy też kontynuować leczenie przez całą zleconą długość terapii, nawet, jeśli objawy ustąpiły szybko. Postępowanie przeciwne, a zatem rezygnacja z całości leczenia może skutkować narastaniem oporności bakterii, niewłaściwym efektem terapii i brakiem skuteczności leku przy kolejnym podaniu.
