Sitagliptin is a drug used to treat type 2 diabetes that works by inhibiting the enzyme DPP-4 (dipeptidyl peptidase 4), which in turn increases levels of glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) and insulin. There are no reports or studies to suggest that sitagliptin attenuates the effects of birth control pills. Birth control pills usually contain hormones (estrogens and/or progestogens) that act on mechanisms that inhibit ovulation and alter cervical mucus to prevent pregnancy. Sitagliptin acts mainly on the glucagon system and insulin, having no direct effect on the hormones used in the contraceptive pill.
