In the case of recurrent intimate infections, it is recommended to perform a vaginal culture to identify bacteria and fungi present in the genital tract and determine their drug sensitivity expressed in the so-called antibiogram. On its basis, targeted therapy is selected for a specific pathogen, which significantly increases the effectiveness of treatment and reduces the risk of relapse. The test can be performed in the gynaecologist's or midwife's office and at gynecological swab collection points at diagnostic laboratories. A referral for tests is not required, you usually have to wait several days for the result. Along with the results of the smear test, you should go to a visit to the gynecologist, who will prescribe the appropriate treatment. In some cases, it may also be necessary to carry out appropriate treatment with your partner. The issue of daily intimate hygiene is also important - it is worth being aware that the abuse of intimate hygiene lotions can have the opposite effect to the intended one, because it can lead to damage to the natural protective barrier on the surface of the skin. It is worth paying attention to whether the composition of the preparation used does not contain strong detergents, e.g. SLS, SLES and fragrances that can dry out and irritate the skin, increasing susceptibility to infections. To dry intimate areas, use a separate towel, preferably paper towels. It is also worth ensuring that the underwear worn is not too tight and pay attention to what materials it is made of (natural fabrics, e.g. cotton, are recommended).
