Does it make sense to work with a psychologist and not a psychotherapist on mental illnesses? Can psychologists deal with something so serious and really help, just like a psychotherapist? It is possible that I will have to go to a psychologist before I get to a psychotherapist at the National Health Fund, although it is not yet a foregone conclusion because I am still at the stage of finding out what are the waiting times in several institutions

A psychologist can provide support to a person in a mental crisis, while a psychotherapist is entitled to conduct psychotherapy understood as a regular process. A person with mental illness should be under the care of a psychiatrist - even if medication is not ordered, it is worth having such a consultation - regardless of the choice of other forms of coping with the mental health problem. It is worth explaining that a psychologist can be a person who completes a five-year master's degree. However, a psychologist is not a doctor - here he should be distinguished from a psychiatrist, who is a specialized doctor of medicine. On the other hand, a psychotherapist can be a person with higher education (not necessarily after psychology, which means that the psychotherapist does not have to be a psychologist) who completes specialized training. Such training can also be undergone by a psychologist. A psychologist can therefore also be a psychotherapist.
