The medicine Famotidine Ranigast currently available on the market contains famotidine, which, although it reduces the secretion of hydrochloric acid in the stomach just like PPIs, has a different mechanism of action. Famotidine belongs to the group of H2 receptor antagonists, whose mechanism of action is to block H2 receptors in the parietal cells of the stomach, thus inhibiting the secretion of hydrochloric acid. On the other hand, PPIs, i.e. proton pump inhibitors, inhibit the production of hydrochloric acid by the proton pump located in the parietal cells of the gastric mucosa. Due to their different mechanism of action, these drugs are less likely to cause side effects and are the drugs of first choice for the treatment of heartburn. However, they are characterized by the fact that you have to wait up to several days for action. In turn, famotidine begins to work after about an hour after admission and is therefore chosen for emergency treatment.
