In the case of beta hCG, there are norms for individual weeks of pregnancy, since chorionic gonadotropin is a hormone characteristic of pregnancy. A low level of beta hCG (usually below 5 mIU/ml, but individual laboratories may give a slightly lower or slightly higher ceiling value) means that the result of such a test is negative. In non-pregnant women, the result will be low or below the level detectable by the laboratory, but it may vary between individual tests.
