Tobacco smoke contains up to several dozen chemical compounds with a documented carcinogenic effect. It is believed that smokers may have a risk of developing the disease up to several dozen times higher than in non-smokers, e.g. smoking one pack of cigarettes a day for more than 30 years causes the risk of lung cancer to increase 20-60 times in men and 14-20 times in women. Quitting smoking makes this risk gradually decrease. Cigarette smoking is considered the most important risk factor for lung cancer.
