W przypadku leczenia przeciwbakteryjnego niezwykle ważne jest zachowanie ściśle określonych odstępów czasowych pomiędzy kolejnymi dawkami. Pominięcie pojedynczej dawki może negatywnie wpłynąć na skuteczność terapii. Co więcej, pominięcie dawki sprzyja rozwojowi oporności bakterii na stosowane leki, co może wpłynąć na skuteczność leczenia w przyszłości.

Należy unikać pomijania dawek chemioterapeutyków, jednak w przypadku, gdy doszło już do pominięcia dawki leku, leczenie należy kontynuować zgodnie ze schematem, tak by przyjąć całość zaleconej ilości leku.
