Exacyl (tranexamic acid) is sometimes used off-label to treat hyperpigmentation, especially melasma. It is a recognized supportive method that often brings very good results when other methods fail. This drug inhibits inflammatory processes and melanin synthesis, which leads to a marked lightening of skin lesions.
Although the doses used in dermatology are much lower than those used to inhibit bleeding, this drug affects blood clotting. The most serious, although rare, side effect is the risk of thrombosis, which is why a cardiovascular history is necessary before treatment.
Please also remember about sun protection. Without the rigorous use of UV filters (SPF 50+), the effects of Exacyl therapy may be short-lived.
Your doctor's decision to introduce this drug is usually based on the assessment that the aesthetic benefits outweigh the minimal risk, but this requires monitoring of your health.
