Why did I experience only spotting instead of menstruation after stopping Provera?
12.99 zł

I took Provera medication between the 16th-21st day of my cycle for 5 days and my menstruation did not occur and I am certainly not pregnant. Only brown spotting was present for a few days and it started on the 7th day after stopping the drug. Why don't I have my period, could there be any side effects of this medication?

After stopping Provera, you may experience only scanty spotting or even no period, especially if your endometrium (the lining of the womb) was thin before treatment. The so-called menstruation is the peeling off of the endometrial layer, which is excreted with blood and mucus. If in the first phase of the cycle the endometrium did not have time to develop properly, after discontinuation of the hormone there is nothing to "exfoliate" and hence only brown spotting. This is a normal and common effect of the hormone.

If the situation repeats, it is worth seeing a gynaecologist to possibly rule out other cycle disorders.
