Good evening. I was prescribed levofloxacin for cystitis. Took the first tablet this morning about 10 o'clock. Now it's 11 p.m. in the evening. I have had increasing pain in both knees for about 2 hours. Can this actually be a side effect of this antibiotic?

Hi, I recently had to take levofloxacin for 2 weeks and since the last intake my left knee hurts without any external influence.
What about you now?

Levofloxacin is a quinolone antibiotic with bactericidal activity.
The safety data sheet contains information about the side effects of this medicine. Among them, there is information about possible pain and swelling in the joints. These effects are rare, but inflammation of the joints and even tendon rupture can also occur.
The risk is particularly increased in the elderly (over 60 years), after an organ transplant, if there are kidney problems or if they are being treated with corticosteroids.
All alarming and sudden side effects should be communicated to the attending physician.
As soon as you see the first signs of pain or inflammation in the tendon (for example, in the ankle, wrist, elbow, shoulder or knee), stop taking the medicine. It is necessary to consult a doctor. The sore area should be relieved as much as possible. Additionally, you should not overexert yourself, as this can increase the risk of tendon rupture.
