Good morning. My daughter was given the antibiotic Amoxicilina 250 mg/5 ml 3 times a day for 7 days in doses of 10 ml every 8 hours. The doctor only asked about the child's age, but not about the weight. Hence my question as to whether the prescribed dose of antibiotic is correct. The daughter weighs 19kg, age 7 years. We are in the UK. Thank you

The amount of antibiotic dose depends not only on body weight or age, but also on the type and severity of the infection. In children weighing less than 40 kg, doses of up to 90 mg/kg body weight per day in divided doses are usually used, i.e. for a child weighing 19 kg, it would be 1710 mg. If dosed with 10 ml 3 times a day, the daily dose will be 1500 mg, i.e. not exceeding the maximum recommended dose.
