Parenteral nutrition is administered using a cannula or catheter inserted into a central or peripheral vein. Most hospitalized patients receive parenteral nutrition into the central veins through central vascular catheters (commonly referred to as deep punctures). The duration of intravenous administration depends on the individual needs of the patient and the type of venous access.

Yes, parenteral nutrition is safe. It is not associated with a higher risk of complications, mortality or a longer hospital stay. Parenteral nutrition can also be administered at the patient's home.

Parenteral nutrition is based on intravenous administration of nutrients of a strictly defined composition in those patients in whom nutrition via the gastrointestinal tract (oral, intragastric, enteral) is insufficient or contraindicated.

A special feature of parenteral nutrition is the ability to quickly supply a large amount of nutrients with the right composition. This is particularly important in the case of severely malnourished patients, patients with postoperative complications, as well as those treated in the intensive care unit.
