Isotretinoin (the active ingredient in Axotret) does not treat hyperpigmentation, but acne with a risk of scarring and discolouration. This substance has an anti-inflammatory effect and inhibits the activity and size of sebaceous glands, thanks to which it reduces the number of blackheads and the growth of Propionibacterium acnes bacteria, which feed on sebum. Acne discoloration, on the other hand, is a complication of acne that results from improper distribution of the pigment. They can persist for a long time and are treated after the end of acne therapy.
If acne leaves scars or discoloration, you should discuss with your doctor possible ways to reduce them, such as skin treatments or proper care, after stopping treatment with Axotret.
