The active substance in Ossica is ibandronic acid. Its side effects in the form of gastrointestinal reactions, such as heartburn, stomach discomfort or swallowing problems, are possible. Less commonly, problems with the jaw bones, called osteoarthritis, may occur, however this is rare and mainly affects people taking bisphosphonates on a long-term basis, especially at high doses such as those used to treat certain types of cancer.
Direct gum damage is not commonly cited as a side effect of ibandronic acid.
