Ozempic (semaglutide) is a drug approved for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. It is a drug from the group of glucagon-like receptor agonists type 1 (GLP-1), which works by increasing insulin secretion, decreasing glucagon secretion, and slowing gastric emptying, which contributes to lowering blood glucose levels.
In type 1 diabetes, the body does not produce enough insulin because the beta cells of the pancreas, responsible for producing insulin, are destroyed by the body's own immune system. Therefore, in people with type 1 diabetes, the use of drugs that increase insulin secretion, such as Ozempic, may not provide therapeutic benefit because there is a lack of sufficient production of endogenous insulin.
For this reason, Ozempic is not recommended for people with type 1 diabetes. In the treatment of type 1 diabetes, insulin is most commonly used, which is necessary to control blood glucose levels. If you need to treat type 1 diabetes, it is important to follow the advice of your endocrinologist and provide a well-balanced insulin therapy.
