Hello! Do antidepressants irritate the stomach? Recently I had problems, lack of appetite, nausea, weight in the stomach after eating a very small meal or drinking more water. I am waiting for an examination, a gastroscope. So far it is not known what was the cause of this. I want to watch my stomach, and not take too much medication. Today, a psychiatrist prescribed me a medicine that I have to take either every morning or on an ad hoc basis – the choice is mine. The drug is called Sympramol 50mg. Can this drug be harmful to the stomach?

Sympramol is a tricyclic antidepressant with anxiolytic and antidepressant effects, it is used, m.in. in somatic disorders, such as the described stomach problems. The drug will definitely not worsen your condition, and in the long run it is able to improve your well-being if psychological factors are the root of the problem. At the time of taking the drug should limit the intake of fats: fatty sausage, butter, lard, fast food. Meals rich in fats increase the absorption of the drug, causing the risk of side effects. You should also avoid taking supplements containing St. John's wort. St. John's wort causes a decrease in the concentration of the drug in the blood. During treatment with Sympramol, the consumption of foods that are a source of nitrates (greenhouse vegetables sold in early spring, e.g. lettuce, radishes, carrots, cucumbers, spinach, kohlrabi, cauliflowers, cabbage, beetroot, as well as meat products and sausages preserved with nitrates) should be limited. Through the gdziepolek.pl service, you can check the availability of Sympramol and book it at the pharmacy of your choice: https://www.gdziepolek.pl/produkty/76409/sympramol-drazetki/apteki
