Persistent postoperative pain is defined as pain lasting more than 3 months. It most often occurs after thoracotomy, nephrectomy, inguinal hernia surgery, mammary gland surgery, amputations and after injuries to the limbs and chest. Pregabalin and Duloxetine belong to the first line of therapy - their undoubted advantage is a small number of drug interactions and a fairly good safety profile. The onset of analgesic effect occurs in a period of 7–10 days. The minimum duration of treatment is about 4 weeks. It is difficult to estimate how long the drugs will have to be used, due to the fact that a significant part of the drugs used in the treatment of neuropathic pain is used off-label. The dose and duration of use is always determined by the doctor. There is no specific time frame that determines how long a given medicine can be used. The patient should be in constant, regular contact with a doctor who will assess the effectiveness of treatment and the course of the disease and determine further proceedings.
