Hello, I got a prescription for the drug Miravil. I am breastfeeding a two-year-old baby (for sleep only) and I am very afraid to start therapy for this reason. Will the pills harm the child?

According to the Summary of Product Characteristics of Miravil: "Small amounts of sertraline and its metabolite N-desmethylsertraline are excreted in milk. In breastfed infants, very low or undetectable serum concentrations were generally observed, with the single exception of an infant with a sertraline concentration corresponding to approximately 50% of the maternal concentration (but no noticeable effect on the infant's health). To date, no adverse reactions have been reported in infants breastfed by mothers using sertraline, but such a risk cannot be excluded. The use of the drug is not recommended for breastfeeding mothers unless the doctor assesses that the associated benefit outweighs the risks." If your doctor has prescribed Miravil, he may have said that your benefits are greater than your risks.
