The active substance in Xarelto is rivaroxaban. Rivaroxaban is a highly selective, direct inhibitor of factor Xa. Inhibition of factor Xa activity interrupts the intra- and extra-derived route of the blood coagulation cascade, inhibiting both thrombin production and blood clot formation. Its action is therefore not to dissolve blood clots, but to inhibit their formation.
