To @Micha l:
These medicines should not be combined with each other unless your doctor tells you otherwise.

Hello, can sulfasalazine (tablets) be combined with mesalazine (suppositories)?
Thank you.

Both drugs have an indication for the treatment of ulcerative colitis. Sulfasalazine in the body is broken down into mesalazine and sulfapyridine (e.g. Sulfasalazin), and Asamax contains the finished decomposition product of sulfasalazine, or mesalazine. In the case of the use of sulfasalazine, stronger side effects are possible associated with the release of the second component of the breakdown, i.e. sulfapyridine. Asamax contains only mesalazine and should cause fewer side effects (if any). However, both drugs have an analogous effect and the choice of therapy depends on the attending physician. Drugs work quickly, within 1-2 days you can already observe a slight improvement, but it depends on the state of health or the stage of the disease, etc. Your doctor should adjust the appropriate dose so that the medicine starts working as soon as possible. Often, in the course of remission, the dose can be reduced and maintenance therapy can be used.
