Betamethasone is a synthetic glucocorticosteroid, with a strong anti-inflammatory effect. It is devoid of mineralocorticosteroid effect. It inhibits the development of the inflammatory process, has an immunosuppressive and anti-allergic effect. Reduces capillary permeability and swelling. It is a drug available only on prescription, so its inclusion in therapy should be decided by a doctor on the basis of anamnesis and physical examination. Betamethasone is not used in children in the first year of life. Betamethasone may be used in older children, but the treatment should not last longer than 5 days, due to more frequent side effects.
