Hydrokortyzon zaliczany jest do glikokortykosteroidów, związków potocznie nazywanych sterydami. Uważa się, że glikokortykosteroidy ograniczają skutki tak zwanej "burzy cytokinowej" – nadmiarowej, gwałtownej i szkodliwej reakcji organizmu usiłującego zwalczyć koronawirusa mogącej prowadzić do uszkodzenia płuc i dysfunkcji wielonarządowej. Działanie przeciwzapalne kortykosteroidów może zapobiegać tym szkodliwym skutkom lub je łagodzić.
