Herbapect jest syropem smarującym (poślizgowym, powlekającym), czyli takim, który tworzy na śluzówce dróg oddechowych nawilżającą powłokę. Powoduje one zmniejszenie chrypy i drapania w gardle.
Nie jest to zatem preparat, który zwalczy kaszel mokry - można go stosować jako uzupełnienie do aktualnie przyjmowanego środka na kaszel, aby złagodzić podrażnienie śluzówki gardła wywołane kaszlem.
