Taking proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) shortly before the test may reduce the reliability of tests detecting Helicobacter pylori infection, m.in. the urease test, and give a false negative result.
It is recommended to discontinue PPIs at least 2 weeks before the diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori, including the one performed during gastroscopy. In this situation, the test can still be performed, but its result may not be fully reliable. Be sure to inform the doctor performing the gastroscopy about taking PPI – he or she may decide to interpret the result or suggest another test at a later date.
To prevent such mistakes, PPIs should be discontinued for about 2 weeks before the test. In addition to the urease test, this also applies to the detection of bacteria in histopathological examination, breath test and testing of bacterial antigens in faeces.
