Is Prontosan enough for wound care after surgery (e.g. after hip alloplasty), or is it better to use Kodan disinfectant?
12.99 zł

In the care of the postoperative wound (e.g. after hip arthroplasty), can I use only gauze pads soaked in Prontosan liquid to rub the wound? Or rather use a product such as Kodan? What if there are seams, e.g. metal seams?

According to the guidelines of the Polish Society for Wound Treatment (PTLR), the management of wounds — including postoperative wounds — should include several stages: wound cleaning, infection/inflammation control, maintaining moisture and wound margin care (the so-called TIME strategy).

A preparation such as Prontosan (which is a cleansing solution) may be the right choice for cleaning the wound and maintaining the right wound environment. The guidelines indicate that, even in non-infected wounds, it is recommended to use a wound rinse (lavaseptic) containing surfactant — which helps to remove impurities/biofilm.

Agents such as Copenhagen (typically disinfectants/antiseptics) are indicated for wounds at risk of infection or infected, i.e. when there are signs of infection or significant risk factors. The PTLR guidelines state that in such situations, an antiseptic and/or dressings with antibacterial substances should be included.

If your postoperative wound with metal sutures does not show signs of infection (e.g. severe pain, redness, purulent exudate), then using Prontosan alone (i.e. rinsing/cleansing) daily may be sufficient – in combination with appropriate dressing and observation.

However, if there are symptoms of infection or the wound is in a high-risk area (e.g. joint implants, poor blood supply, diabetes), then it is better to use an additional antiseptic (such as Kodan) and consult a surgeon or wound care specialist.

It is also important to take care of the skin surrounding the wound and make sure that the wound is not overdried or macerated.
