In most cases, magnetic resonance imaging of the knee is performed without contrast, because the structures of the joint – such as cartilage, menisci or ligaments – are clearly visible without the additional administration of a contrast agent.
Contrast is used only in special situations, e.g. when the doctor suspects cancerous changes, infection or it is necessary to differentiate tissues very precisely. If there is no clear annotation about contrast on the referral, a standard examination without it will be sufficient. If in doubt, it is worth asking the referring doctor.
