Good morning. I will be very grateful for an answer. I have ADHD and have taken atomoxetine before. Due to very serious shortages in pharmacies and wholesalers, I switched to venlafaxine (Oriven). My question is: is Oriven also a treatment for ADHD or will atomoxetine work better? Because opinions are divided, and supposedly both drugs work on dopamine

Venlafaxine Mechanism of Action:
"Preclinical studies have shown that venlafaxine and its active metabolite O demethylvenlafaxine (ODV) are serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors. Venlafaxine is also a weak inhibitor of dopamine reuptake."
Indications for the use of Venlafaxine:
- Episodes of major depression.
- Preventing the recurrence of major depressive episodes.
- Treatment of generalized anxiety disorder.
- Treatment of social phobia.
- Treatment of panic attack with or without agoraphobia
Venlafaxine can be used in patients with ADHD if their clinical condition requires it (e.g. in the case of concomitant depressive/anxiety episodes). It is not a drug registered to alleviate symptoms strictly related to ADHD, moreover, some patients experience side effects associated with the use of drugs that increase serotonin levels in the nervous system ("muddiness", drowsiness during the day).
The more commonly recommended drug in such cases is Bupropion (e.g. Welbox, Wellbutrin), which is a selective inhibitor of neuronal reuptake of catecholamines (noradrenaline and dopamine) with minimal effect on the uptake of indoloamines (serotonin). Bupropion is a third-line drug (it is recommended to alleviate ADHD symptoms with methylphenidate or atomoxetine first).
