L-tryptophan is an essential amino acid that the body uses to produce serotonin and melatonin, supporting mood and sleep. It can be helpful in reducing stress symptoms and improving mood, but its use should be thought about and consulted with a doctor, especially in the case of pregnant women and people taking other medications.
In moderate doses, supplementation with L-tryptophan is usually safe, however, excessive consumption can lead to side effects such as drowsiness, dizziness, and stomach upset.
L-tryptophan up to 5 g per day for 21 days has been shown to be safe in clinical trials1. Nevertheless, there is a lack of sufficient data on the long-term use of this supplement. L-tryptophan supplementation should not exceed one month (30 days) without consulting a doctor.
