Tourette's disease (Tourette's syndrome), OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder), and nervous tics can be difficult to manage, especially in young people. The drug chlorprothixen (chlorprothixen) is a neuroleptic used mainly in the treatment of anxiety and psychotic disorders, as well as in some cases of Tourette's disease, due to its sedative and anxiolytic effects.
However, reactions to this drug can vary from person to person. Some neuroleptics can sometimes worsen tics or cause other unwanted symptoms. Symptoms such as increased screaming, barking sounds and early waking up may be related to Tourette's disease, but may also be due to the medication or dose not being properly working.
Waking up early (at 5 am) and increased tics can be a signal that your daughter's sleep is disturbed. It is important to assess whether the sleep is sufficiently deep and restorative. Tics can be exacerbated by stress or fatigue. It is worth paying attention to the triggers and trying to minimize them, e.g. through relaxation techniques. In addition to medication, behavioral therapy such as CBIT (comprehensive behavioral intervention for tics) can help manage tics.
In this situation, please contact your treating physician (preferably a neurologist or psychiatrist) to discuss the side effects and effectiveness of the drug. There may be other treatment options for tics, such as aripiprazole, risperidone or clonidine.
