A child of almost 6 years received from an otolaryngologist ephedrine powder 0.0055 (+calci lactici ad 0.2, m.f. pulvis, d.t.d no 20) to be used twice a day. Unfortunately, she mistakenly received the third dose. Has there been an overdose and what could be the consequences?

The maximum daily dose of ephedrine for a child aged 6 years is 50 mg and a single dose is 16.66 mg. This can be calculated using Young's formula, in which the dose for a child is the product of the child's age and the adult dose divided by the child's age plus 12.
The maximum daily dose of ephedrine according to Pharmacopoeia XI for an adult is 150 mg, and a single dose is 50 mg.
The single dose and daily dose can also be calculated based on the child's body weight, as in the example below:
Taking the third dose of 5.5 mg of ephedrine per day does not exceed the daily dose calculated for a 6-year-old child. However, this does not mean that the occurrence of possible side effects of the drug, e.g. excessive stimulation, sleep problems, irritability or increased heart rate, can be completely ruled out. If you notice any worrying symptoms, you should report them to your doctor.
