Can I drink alcohol if I use Glucophage XR for insulin resistance?

The endocrinologist prescribed me metformine, I don't have diabetes, at most I have slight insulin resistance. Then Can I drink alcohol while taking glucophaga xr? How long after taking the tablets (2x500mg) can I drink alcohol so that there is no risk of lactic acidosis?
